COUNCILLORS voted unanimously to approve a ‘red route’ parking restriction for a popular car boot sale at Winwick despite objections from B&Q.

The ‘red route’ will mean that no one can stop along some stretches of road on the A49, Winwick Link Road and Delph Lane just behind B&Q.

The route would also include stopping for the purpose of unloading and so B&Q are looking for assurances that their delivery drivers should be exempt from any such restrictions.
In emails revealed in the report a B&Q spokesperson writes: “We welcome in principle the proposal to introduce a Red Route Clearway along Delph Lane. However, we are concerned that B&Q service
vehicles going about their normal business as they have for decades may be captured within the same net.”

Mark Tune, Warrington Borough Council traffic management and road safety manager said that they could not provide what B&Q are looking for. He said that civil enforcement officers “can’t determine the reason why they are there and so can’t allow the lorries to be exempt.”

Stuart Mann, councillor for Burtonwood and Winwick shared the view from residents, He claimed: “80-90% of residents are for the proposal.”
In response to being asked about the car boot organisers stance, he said: “There’s always been an ongoing debate with the car boot sale parking and they say that it is outside of their area and so there is little they can do.”
There was also concern among councillors that cars parking on Delph Lane will need somewhere else to park. He added that a lot of the time people park there to avoid paying for parking on site.
