Brilliant season ended with a 4-1 defeat

WARRINGTON Hockey Women’s 1st Team ended their brilliant season with a 4-1 defeat away at Triton.

The game started in an even but end-to-end fashion as both teams looked to play good, attacking
hockey. The hosts took the lead through a deflected strike, but Warrington snapped back moments
later with a deflected goal of their own, Sarah Gregson’s cross tipped in expertly by Steph Quayle.
Triton the league’s top scorers looked to flex their attacking muscles with several short corners but
were denied by Olivia Mason and Gloria Roden-Lui in defence and top saves by Tracy Jackson in goal.
However, the hosts made two breakthroughs on the cusp of half-time with some excellent
interchanges.
The second half saw Warrington push hard to get back into it. Louise Unsworth, Helen Fairhurst, and
Abi Hynes all linked up well in attack and were only stopped registering by an impressive
performance from the Triton goalkeeper. Triton scored their final goal on the break, but the final day
defeat takes nothing away from a brilliant season for the Women’s 1st team.
Warrington Women’s Development Team’s season concluded with a 5-2 defeat to local rivals Lymm.
The first season for the Development side has been a standout success for the club but they came up
against a very strong Lymm side who took the spoils. Goals from Jo Jakey, assisted by Bella Thornton
and a Katherine Parker strike weren’t enough to secure anything from the game.
Warrington Men’s 1st Team suffered a controversial 3-2 defeat away at Bury.
Warrington started strong, playing some excellent possession hockey, making the hosts chase the
ball. Warrington deservedly took the lead from their first short corner, which Laurence Ankers
dispatched with aplomb into the top corner with a drag-flick. The visitors then hit the self-destruct
button and handed Bury an equaliser on a plate with a loose pass before the hosts grabbed a second
from a short corner of their own.
Warrington regrouped at half-time and took control of the game with more slick play, no easy feat
with a very enthusiastic Bury umpire imposing himself on the game. Captain, Richard Cook was very
unlucky to be green carded for adjudged dissent from one of his players before returning to the pitch
and hammering in an equaliser to make it 2-2.
Further umpiring decisions saw Warrington reduced to 10 once again before Bury won a short corner
with a couple of minutes on the clock. The initial effort was blocked on the line by a combination of
Scott Reed and Andy Powell before the ball illegally ricocheted off a Bury shin and in, an incident
missed by the umpire.
Warrington Men’s 2nd team fell to a 3-1 home defeat against Wilmslow.
Warrington started slowly in their final game of the season – affording their opponents too much
time and space. Wilmslow went in 2-0 up at half-time and Warrington had lost midfielder Iain
Richards to injury.
Warrington did themselves justice in the second half and put on a stronger performance. Sam Jowett
and Richard Bee caused their opponents problems in the final third with the latter hitting the post.
Warrington were handed a lifeline as Rob Powell’s goal-bound effort was stopped on the line by a
foot. Powell then converted the penalty flick, lifting the ball over the goalkeeper and into the net. As
Warrington pushed for an equaliser Wilmslow countered and secured the points with a third.
