Unbeaten streak came to an end with back-to-back defeats

WARRINGTON Hockey Women’s Development team’s unbeaten streak came to an end with back-to-back defeats on Saturday and Sunday.

The Saturday game against visiting Whitchurch was a high scoring affair in a Warrington hailstorm with the hosts at the wrong end of an eight-goal thriller.
The game was level 2-2 at halftime with Kara Doyle and Abi Hynes on the scoresheet for Warrington
after flowing team moves. Doyle then nudged the hosts ahead with her second of the game before
Whitchurch rallied, altered their formation and overloaded the Warrington defence to see the game
finish 5-3 in their favour.
Despite the defeat, positives were taken in the form of individual performances with Laura Herst and
Amy Molden excelling while one of the youngest players, Aditi, once again highlighted her great
potential.
Sunday saw the Development side face Deeside who’re one of the top teams in the league, with
this game rescheduled from February.
Deeside ran out 2-1 winners, their first goal coming direct from the start of the second half while
their second came thanks to an uncharacteristic mistake in the Warrington defence.
Katherine Parker scored Warrington’s goal with a clean strike from a short corner, but the team was
unable to grab a second thanks to excellent work from the Deeside goalkeeper.

Warrington Men’s 1st team suffered a humbling 5-3 home defeat against Wilmslow.
The relegation-threatened visitors capitalised on a poor pass out of defence to snatch an early lead
before Richard Cook equalised with a drag-flick soon after. Wilmslow retook the lead after another
loose pass led to another successful counter-attack. Andrew Gould and Alan Livingstone were both
unlucky not to score with reflex volleys crashing off the post and just wide before Scott Reed found
the equaliser with a poacher’s finish at the far post.
Wilmslow took the lead for the third time just after half-time after another mistake from Warrington
who were putting in their worst performance of the season. Laurence Ankers followed Cook’s
example by scoring Warrington’s third with a drag-flick into the bottom corner.
Warrington pushed hard for a winner, but squandered numerous great openings and were denied by
a Wilmslow goalkeeper in top form before the visitors snatched two late goals on the counter attack.
Warrington Men’s 2nd team fell to an 8-2 loss away at Whitchurch.
On a very old, and worn pitch the team struggled to get their passing game going and gave the ball
away far too cheaply. Frustrations with questionable umpiring grew and Warrington’s cause wasn’t
helped by a couple of cards being shown and players being sin-binned.
Warrington’s first goal came from a clinical Rob Powell strike before Douglas Samuels scored the
second with a powerful run and finish.
Warrington Women’s 1st team were out of action this week.
