Huge weekend of hockey – but mixed fortunes

IT was a huge weekend of hockey at Warrington with six games and a super Saturday triple header!

The men’s 2nd team secured their first win of the season.
Rooted at the bottom of the table, level on points with Northern, who had previously beaten them, Saturday’s re-match was crucial.
Warrington came out 2-0 winners, enabling them to leap-frog up the table and, hopefully, steer clear of relegation.
Top scorer Rob Powell added to his tally alongside a series of mazy runs and Mark Taylor hit the scorelines with a top D strike.
The mens 2s snatched another point on Sunday in a 1-1 draw against Deeside, with an Iain Richards rocket raking in the point in a rearranged game.
The women’s section celebrated a double win, with the development team hitting Alderley Edge for six with a 6-1 victory.
Frankie Hayes and Amy Molden tapped in at back posts, while junior captain Bella Thornton smashed in a volley.
The women’s 1st team enjoyed a1-0 victory over Knutsford, Steph Quayle scoring with her trademark thump of a strike.
Captain Gregson stood out in the middle, anchoring the team alongside Lauren Hayes, while Jenny Fox and Kara Doyle ran riot on the wings. Helen Fairhurst and Louise Sullivan added further dominance in the attacking areas to park the ball in Knutsford’s half for 70 minutes.

The men’s 1st team suffered a weekend of woes as they came up short against their toughest opponents of the season. Travelling away to Crewe they went down 3-1 loss against a well-drilled home team. Thomas Lloyd stood out to keep the scoreline respectable with multiple saves, while Harvey Mason took his opportunity to score well.
Sunday’s rearranged game against high-flying Deeside was Warrington’s turn to be hit for 6, as the visitors fired six goals past a lacklustre and tired Warrington team.
Captain Richard Cook and Sam Pinion worked well in the centre, unplayable in patches, but couldn’t sustain enough to gain a foothold in a tough game.
