A police pursuit incident on the M6 at Warrington, caused lengthy delays after officers attempted to stop a black BMW convertible on the A49 at Stretton.
The vehicle failed to stop and made off onto the M56 and then the M6 before eventually being stopped near Junction 20 where the entry slip road was also closed.
Three lanes were closed and very slow traffic is being reported on the northbound carriageway with delays of at least 45 minutes being reported between junction 20 for the M56 at Lymm Interchange and junction 21 for the A57 Manchester Road at Woolston.
Traffic stretched back to junction 19 for Northwich and Knutsford at Tabley and motorists are advised to find alternative routes or allow extra time for journeys.
The vehicle involved has since been recovered from the scene and all lanes are now open.
