M6 southbound re-opened following four vehicle collision

UPDATED: THE M6 near Warrington has now fully re-opened following a four-vehicle collision resulting in the southbound carriageway being closed between junctions 21-20 causing more than 5 miles of congestion.

Four fire crews from Lymm, Birchwood and Stockton Heath plus one from GMFRS attended the scene at 15:52.

The M6 was closed between junctions 21 to 20 southbound following a road traffic collision involving four cars.
At 16:33 Firefighters had isolated the batteries on two petrol cars and then worked on the battery of an electric car.
Highways cleared lanes 3 and 4 so they could be reopened.
Emergency services were also in attendance.
Delays buyilt on the approach from J23, currently adding at least 65 minutes to journey times.
Delays were also being reported on the surrounding highway networks.

UPDATE 17:16 Traffic has been released in lane 4 (of 4). Lanes 1, 2 & 3 remain closed on the #M6 southbound between J21 & J20 near #Warrington following the earlier collision.
Delays continue to build from J23, currently adding at least 45 minutes to journey times.

UPDATED 17:26 – Firefighters have now left the scene. They stood by with a casualty who remained in their car until the arrival of an ambulance. The casualty has been taken to hospital.

UPDATE: 17:50 All lanes have reopened on the #M6 southbound between J21 & J20 near #Warrington following the earlier collision.
Residual delays remain from J23, currently adding at least 65 minutes to journey times.
