Dream comes true as Stand Out Socks co-founder welcomes two new colleagues with Down Syndrome into paid roles

THE co-founder of Warrington-based Stand Out Socks, Ross Laing, has welcomed two new colleagues with Down Syndrome to the business he launched with his brother Christian two years ago.

It marks a pivotal moment in business history for the Stockton Heath-based brothers, with October being Down Syndrome awareness month.

Christian, who launched the sock business with his brother in 2021 on National Down Syndrome Day, said: “This marks a momentous day for the company and a significant step towards dismantling outdated stereotypes, showcasing the immense capabilities of individuals with learning disabilities, and reaffirming their right place in the business world.”

Their business was founded on the principles of quality and inclusivity, Stand Out Socks understands that socks are more than just fashion accessories; they serve as catalysts to open discussions on disability inclusion and raise Down Syndrome awareness.
Beyond offering stylish and comfortable socks, each purchase contributes directly to creating meaningful job opportunities for individuals with learning disabilities.
Christian added: “This is a remarkable achievement for Stand Out Socks, and we are immensely proud to break new ground in inclusive employment. We firmly believe that people with learning disabilities have unique talents and abilities to offer in the workplace.
“Our decision to hire our first team members with Down Syndrome is a testament to our commitment to diversity and inclusion.”

The pair had always hoped Stand Out Socks would create jobs locally for Ross and other “stand out” people who find it difficult to find paid employment.
They decided to start a sock company because National Down Syndrome Day features a lots-of-socks competition every year.
Christian, now aged 40, said at the time: “We thought, why do this just for one day? And out of that was born the idea of Stand Out Socks.”
Ross aged 32, had “for obvious reasons” always struggled to find work and had never had paid employment, despite having a range of abilities.
The idea of creating a job for Ross, rather than finding him one, has always been in the back of Christian’s mind.
He also wanted to spend more time with his brother and wanted to create something they could do together.
Now not only has their dream come true, but they are also giving hope to others who have struggled to find paid employment.
