Road closure notice extended by three weeks on town’s first CYCLOPS junction

WORK on Warrington’s first CYCLOPS junction to improve highway safety for cyclists at a cost of nearly £930,000 has been extended by up to three weeks.

Highway planners have given notice of the extension which will come into force after the existing closure notice from October 30.

To minimise traffic disruption the closures from October 30th will be from 7 pm to 11 pm in the evening.

Highway planners say the existing movement through the junction by cycle is ‘difficult and at times dangerous’, stating that a CYCLOPS junction has been identified as the ‘most appropriate’ solution.
The ongoing works have caused significant traffic disruption in and around the area.

Warrington Borough Council has made an Order under Section 14 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 on 20th July 2023. The effect of which is to introduce a prohibition of driving and footway closure as follows: (1) Lovely Lane from its junction with Bewsey Road/Lodge Lane/Folly Lane, to a point approx. 65m in a south westerly direction; (2) Lodge Lane from its junction with Bewsey Road/Folly Lane/Lovely Lane, to a point approx. 75m in a north westerly direction; (3) Folly Lane from its junction with Bewsey Road/Lodge Lane/Lovely Lane, to a point approx. 95m in a north easterly direction; (4) Bewsey Road from its junction with Lodge Lane/Folly Lane/Lovely Lane, to a point approx. 105m in a south easterly direction; (5) Boteler Avenue from its most southerly point, to a point approx. 25m north.
The Order is effective from 7th August 2023 for 16 weeks, however there is a revised date for the following phase of the works: Items 1 – 4, Road Closure – Starting 30/10/23 for 3 weeks, between 19:00 & 23:00. The restrictions will be in place as and when signed on site. Access will be under the control of the relevant Contractor for the duration of the works. The alternative route and reason for the works remains the same as previously advertised.

  1. I cannot believe how this whole project was considered even remotely viable. The only justification must be the £750k of government funding on top of the £200k funded by WBC. A spend of £1m at a time of economic overload is farcical and speaks volumes of our virtue signalling, incompetent council. Assuming this is the first and not the last, how will they propose to fund more? I’d love to see the data that they claim proves it “Highway planners say the existing movement through the junction by cycle is ‘difficult and at times dangerous’, stating that a CYCLOPS junction has been identified as the ‘most appropriate’ solution.”
Thank goodness it’s the closest junction to the hospital.

  2. I totally agree Jim how can you justify a cost of 1 million pounds for one junction
But hey that’s WBC they like wasting tax payers money.
The money could have been spent better elsewhere in the town
