AN award-winning play from Ireland is set to take the stage in Warrington, helping raise funds for local charity Stamp Out Suicide.

The play Prodigal is written by Andrew Carney from Tuam Co Galway, has performances in Liverpool, Friday 4th and Manchester, Saturday 5th, before arriving at Warrington Irish Club on Sunday August 6th at 7pm .

All profits from the perfommances will go to Stamp Out Suicide (registered charity no 1171162) – a Warrington based charity that provide free counselling to anyone living with suicidal thoughts.

Prodigal is an original one-act script written by Andrew Carney, performed by Tom Carney and Andrew Carney. The story concerns Andy and his estranged father Benny. They are reunited after the tragic death of Andy’s brother Seán. They struggle to come to terms with their loss and examine their pasts to attempt to figure out what brought them here while making the first tentative steps toward reconnection. The play is set in a bar following Sean’s funeral.

The one-hour, one-act play was first performed in August 2018, raising a four-figure sum for an Irish mental health charity over 3 different local performance locations and dates in North Galway. The Rustics Bar, Tuam.
Sheridan’s Milltown and Walsh’s Dunmore. All site-specific venues waiving their fees so that the leading Irish mental health charity Pieta House could benefit.
The following Summer, Prodigal returned after extended rehearsals in the Spring and promptly won Best New Writing at the popular Galway Fringe Festival and was also subsequently staged in the performance venue Gibbon’s of Ballinasloe and as a guest of a renowned national Summer drama course, Stage Works, hosted in Athlone in September and October of 2019.
After an unplanned but enforced two year plus hiatus due to the pandemic, Prodigal returned in March and April of 2022. They came back to form after a three month intensive rehearsal block to ensure that the high standards set previously were maintained and even improved upon.
Local performances in Galway and Mayo, Tuam and Foxhall, each site-specific venues were staged- culminating in a trip to Wimbledon last April at the versatile venue and most welcoming club; The South London Irish Association.
They returned at our largest venue to date in September, The Glenamaddy Town Hall Theatre; following that The South London Irish Association again hosted us in October.
The performance received much positive feedback as it has thankfully received on many occasions.
A playwright from Coventry, Jamie McGough (who debuted with the hugely successful play Fighting Irish in The Belgrade last year) was in attendance and secured a venue in Coventry, The Four Provinces, for 2 nights in April. A huge success, well received and our best performances to date!
Looking onwards and upwards and very excited about the potential prospect of working with Colm and SOS!
