Training for young drivers – to make the roads safer

POLICE and Crime Commissioner, John Dwyer, is teaming up with the Youth Fed, Institute of Advanced Motorists (Roadsmart) and other emergency services to help young drivers stay safer on local roads.

The Commissioner is funding a young drivers event in Warrington, where young people can hear from Cheshire Constabulary, Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service (CFRS) and the North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) about risks on the road and how to stay safe. They will also benefit from practical driving sessions led by IAM Roadsmart.
Statistics from CFRS show that in 2021, 26 per cent of incidents on Cheshire’s roads that led to death or serious injury involved young people aged 17-25. The aim of the event is to put the fun into driving for young people by boosting their driving skills and confidence. Ultimately, better drivers save money and are safer.

Mr Dwyer said: “Making Cheshire’s Roads Safer is a key priority in my Police and Crime Plan and I’m delighted to be teaming up with other organisations who share this priority. To achieve safer roads for all, it’s vital to instil good practice in young drivers so that they take these skills throughout their lives.
“If you’re a young person in Cheshire and feel like you need more confidence on the road, I encourage you to sign up for this event.”
There will be four sessions throughout the day:
Think – led by Cheshire Fire & Rescue
Drive – led by Cheshire Constabulary
Survive – led by North West Ambulance Service
Practical – led by IAM RoadSmart

In addition to gaining new skills, attendees will be entered into a draw for a prize which will help them go even further in improving their confidence on the road.
Kevin Bradburne, Director of Operations at Youth Fed said:
“Everyone’s safety on roads matters and we all deserve to feel safe when we move around. This is an exciting opportunity where all emergency service professionals are coming together with the aim to make young people better, safer drivers.”
The event is for young people aged 17-29 and will be held from 09:30 – 13:00 on Friday 20 May, at Safety Central, Cliff Lane, Lymm, Warrington WA13 0TE.
