WHILE many in the media focus on negative news stories we decided to look back at our top 10 “good news” stories from 2022 as we look ahead to the New Year with optimism in Warrington.
These are the top 10 best-read stories during 2022 based on the number of people who read each story, with all of them attracting thousands of readers.
Coming in at No.10 was the relatively recent story about the transformation of the Old Post Office on Springfield Street, into new luxury aparthotels, attracting new trade and footfall into the town centre.
Next at No.9 was our reflection on the 29th anniversary of the Warrington bombing which tragically claimed the lives of two innocent youngsters, Tim Parry Parry and Johnathan Ball. While not good news that two youngsters lost their lives and many more were injured, it is good to know that people still care and that good triumphed over evil as we move toward the 30th anniversary of the bombing this March.
At No.8 was news of the Warrington Weekend wonderland of events that had been lined up by the Warrington BID in the run-up to Christmas – another event which boosted footfall and trade in the town centre.
No7. was news of the exciting new Hive development taking place in the former Co-op building on Sankey Street – another major investment in the town centre.
At No6. was our first look in the historic Raven Inn at Glazebury, which was saved from demolition by the local community and now set to re-open this coming Easter.
No5. was our story about a local business taking over the popular Looking Glass pub at the bottom of Buttermarket Street – again more investment in the town centre.
At No.4 was the launch of the brand new Warrington Edition of Monopoly which generated a huge amount of good PR for the town.
No3. was the rather unusual story about a local resident winning the support of most of her neighbours and Warrington Borough Council after transforming a piece of council owned land into an extension to her garden.
Coming in at No2. was the story of the Fiddlers Ferry site being sold and being earmarked for a major new development – bringing further investment to the town, while also taking pressure of our Green Belt.
Finally, topping the charts at No.1 was our story about new businesses launching on the Warrington high street, again bringing further investment to the town centre.
So despite all the doom and gloom being highlighted in much of the media – there is still plenty to be positive about- and while we sadly have to report the rough with the smooth, there is certainly no need to focus on negativity or click bait – as good news stories can be equally as popular – and are certainly far more rewarding to write.
So here’s to hopefully plenty more “good news” stories to write about in 2023 and we will continue to try our best to bring, open, honest and transparent reporting, free of charge throughout the year – selecting our most uplifting and positive stories for our monthly magazine edition.
