A FIVE-STRONG team from Warrington-based Making Space will hike the length of Hadrian’s Wall to raise funds for the charity’s 40th anniversary.

The team, from the Warrington-based health and social care charity plans to trek over 40km per day over three days between 23-25 September 2022, in order to raise its £1,000 target in sponsorship money.
Team members work in a range of departments at the charity’s head office on Allen Street, including HR, finance and marketing. They include director Phil Orton, who is the charity’s new chief of people, Francis Jones, Office 365 engineer, Chris Mizzi, head of IT, Adam Grimes, internal communications coordinator and Tom Cruse, head of digital people services.

The five men will start their walk in Carlisle and finish in Newcastle, after striding alongside the famous Roman wall remains for around 12 hours per day. Covering 135km, the trek is part of a huge year of events and challenges at Making Space to celebrate the charity’s 40th anniversary.
Last year, the same group donned walking boots and waterproofs in order to complete the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge in 10 and a half hours, raising over £500.

Tom Cruse said: “We are taking on this challenge because we understand that so many people’s mental health has suffered since the pandemic.
We know that spending time outdoors can improve our mental health. So, we want to raise money for a number of garden projects, walking groups and activity sessions that Making Space delivers for people living with mental health conditions or dementia and for their carers. We are looking forward to the challenge but know it will be a tough test.”

The walk is taking place during Making Space’s #40for40 weekend, which encourages people to take on a challenge of their choice as long as it involves the number 40.
