Underground private collection car storage facility finally approved

THE long-running proposal for an underground car storage facility on the former Stretton airfield at Appleton, Warrington has finally been approved.

But the scheme differs considerably from when it was first put forward in 2015. Then it was for 120 vehicles.
Later, in 2019 a scheme for 50 vehicles are approved – and also included a four-storey house.

The scheme now given approval – following the decision of the Secretary of State not to intervene – is about 68 cars – the private collection of applicant Duncan Cameron.
It no longer includes a house, but it does include an above-ground two-storey storage building and the formation of an earth bund.
But the applicant has made it clear that it involves a facility for his own private collection of cars, that there will be no public access and that there is no intention to use the former airfield for motorsport.
The rest of the former airfield site will continue to be used for agriculture. Access would be from Arley Road, Appleton.
Warrington Borough Council planners approved the scheme back in July – subject to the approval of the Secretary of State.
He has indicated that he does not intend to intervene and, as a result, the scheme has been approved.
