M6 closed in both directions as firefighters release casualties trapped in overturned vehicle

A full closure of the M6 near Warrington was put in place this afternoon following a three-vehicle collision involving one on its roof and two people being trapped after colliding through the central reservation.

The incident impacted on traffic in and around Warrington as traffic was diverted off the motorway.

Motorists are being advised to plan their journeys and allow extra time following the incident on the M6 Southbound between Junctions 21 and 20 between Lymm and Woolston.
At 2 pm three fire crews attended at the scene and traffic was stopped in both directions while the air ambulance attended.
Following assessment by ambulance crews, firefighters released the two casualties from the overturned vehicle. The casualties were taken in the care of the ambulance service.

Meanwhile, the Highways Agency is advising Drivers in Cheshire are being advised to plan their journeys.
The collision happened at 1.56pm between junctions 20 (Lymm) and 21 (Woolston Interchange) of the M6 and both the northbound and southbound carriageways were closed.

There are delays of around 45 minutes on each carriageway with congestion of four miles on both carriageways.
A diversion route for drivers is being established.

UPDATED 17:15: The motorway has since re-opened in both directions although a lane 4 road closure remained in place for repair works to the central reservation barrier.

  1. Wow. Hope all involved are ok. With road closures around Lymm and Latchford the traffic only seems to get worse. Also now the Warburton bridge is traffic light controlled…..
