New TV – Which brand should you buy?

1

The TV market is saturated with unfamiliar acronyms, codes and features that we as consumers are expected to know about.

This can make buying a new TV a daunting process – we find that, as with all things, it’s best to start at the beginning when looking for a new TV. In this case, the beginning is a very simple question: “Which brand should I buy?”

This may seem like an arbitrary starting point, but it’s based on sound reasoning. With TV manufactures all vying for attention with grand claims around all aspects of their product, you need to know which brands have the reputation and reliability to back up their claims. This is where we come in. Below, we are going to pull together all the information you need to make sure your new 43-inch TV’s up to scratch and coming from a trustworthy brand.

Below, we look at four of best brands making smart TVs today. Our choices are made from real-life experience with each brand, as well as their contributions to the wider TV marketplace through technological development. Our three picks are LG, Samsung, and Hisense. While these are our absolute faves, the list isn’t exhaustive, as we also have great respect for brands like Sony, Philips, Toshiba and JVC. Read on to see why we made our choices for the best TVs brands to buy.

LG

Once known best for making average smartphones, Korean giant LG is now recognised as one of the most important names in the TV market. The brands TVs are held in extremely high regard, regularly topping best-of lists across the internet.

There are three things that instantly come to mind when thinking of LG. The first is OLED, which LG uses extensively to deliver remarkable contrast and colour realism. The second is refresh rates, which are often adaptive, making the TVs very appealing to gamers and sports fans. The third is webOS, LG’s own smart platform which, though not on every TV set, is considered one of the most pleasant and reasonable smart platforms to use.

Also worth noting is the great attention to design details and the high build quality.

Samsung

Biting at the heels of LG is Samsung. There are a lot of similarities between the two Korean brands, not least their continued tech development that leads the way in the TV marketplace.

The only real thing that gives LG the edge in our book is its dedication to brining OLED to where it is today. This would probably upset the execs, given that their application of QLED technology is set as OLED’s direct competitor. QLED is a brilliant technology that offers a bright, colourful picture.

Like LG, Samsung TVs carry wonderful build quality and attention to detail, and never shy away from providing viewers with complex and powerful features that operate in a user-friendly manner.

Hisense

Hisense is a brand that combines innovative technology to develop TVs with exceptional performance and modest price tags.

ULED is an example of the brand’s unique approach to technology. Hisense TV’s with ULED are basically carrying a combination of features which, together, offer an affordable experience like that found with more-expensive OLED TVs. While OLED still beats it, the performance is staggering and compelling considering the price saving.

Another benefit of Hisense is how its products appear across the market, offering reliable budget TVs through to large, cinematic premium sets. On occasion its ambition outweighs its application, but for anyone looking to get a bargain, you could do a lot worse than something from Hisense.
