Campaigners take to the streets to “make votes matter”

MAKE Votes Matter campaigners in Warrington held a street surgery in support of a National Action Day.

At the same time, an Equal Votes March, which was inspired by the Great Pilgrimage of 1913, which took place in support of women’s suffrage, finished in Preston.

Local campaigner Allan Bird said: “Turnout in local and national elections is often depressingly low. People don’t vote because they feel that either the result is a foregone conclusion, and their vote is wasted or that all politicians are the same. Sometimes people will vote to keep someone they don’t like out, rather than a positive vote for who they want to be elected.

“Make Votes Matter includes members of all the major political parties and is a grassroots organisation with the aim of making Parliament or even the local council closely match how the electorate voted in an election, through proportional representation.”

Elsewhere in the North West, the Make Votes Matter Manchester Group took part in a walk from the Peterloo Massacre Memorial to Stockport. The North Lancashire Make Votes Matter Group took part in a six-day Equal Votes March, inspired by the Great Pilgrimage of 1913, which took place in support of women’s suffrage. The March started on Monday 6 June in Grasmere, and finished in Preston on Saturday, where they were welcomed with a rally.

The Warrington Make Votes Matter group is planning forthcoming online meetings and local events to further the cause of Proportional Representation. Group organiser Andy Watson can be contacted on [email protected].
