Tanker driver arrested after multi-vehicle collision on M56 at Stretton

UPDATED: A tanker driver has been arrested after a van driver was seriously injured following a multi-vehicle collision on the M56 near Stretton yesterday.

The driver of the van, a 38-year-old man from Clock Face in Merseyside, was seriously injured and had to be cut free from his vehicle by firefighters.

He was taken to Aintree Hospital in an air ambulance, where he remains in a stable condition.

The driver of the tanker, a 39-year-old man from Bury, was taken to hospital as a precaution but was then arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

he remains in custody to be questioned by detectives. The driver of the HGV, a 54-year-old man from Belper, Derbyshire, was uninjured.

At 5:39pm yesterday five fire engines were called to the scene of the collision at J10, at the A49 Tarporley Road exit.

The collision involved two heavy goods vehicles and one van. The crews removed one person who was trapped in one of the vehicles and handed them to the care of paramedics.

Lane one and two were closed while the incident was being dealt with and an Air Ambulance doctor also attended to deal with the casualty.

The road was fully closed at 6.15pm, with traffic being held temporarily as emergency services, including the air ambulance, dealt with the incident.

Congestion was worsened due to emergency road repair works around junction 12 on the westbound carriageway, also causing lengthy delays.

All lanes have since re-opened.
