KEEP Britain Tidy’s Great British Spring Clean achieved a major goal in Warrington at the weekend when several litter groups combined to tidy the entire 15-mile length of the Sankey Canal and a 16-mile stretch fo the Trans Pennine Trail.

Teams at Sankey Bridges, Callands, Winwick, Newton and St Helens all worked together, along with a cycle litter picking team to tidy the whole canal path from St Helens through Warrington to Widnes, while other Warrington Litter Network groups tackle the Trans Pennine Trail.

Altogether 128 bags of litter were gathered. In terms of litter bags, the teams’ final scores were St Helens 75, Warrington 63 – This made up for a clear Warrington win in 2021!

Spokesperson Tony Dixon said: “The fact that there was 30% less litter this year than 2021 (168 bags) is actually very encouraging.
“We are clearing historical litter in a deep clean process. Innovative homemade litter bins, emptied by volunteers from Winwick Litter Network, are reducing the litter burden in the Winwick section.
“There are still a couple of areas to work on. This year we have set up a new litter network to tackle the whole length of the canal. It is called the Sankey Canal Litter Network. It can be found at litternetworks.org.”

Tony added: “New volunteers are also welcome to make themselves known and help us to tidy this unique and beautiful traffic-free trail that runs through the heart of our town.
“The Sankey Canal is the oldest canal in the world and is used by cyclists, walkers, joggers and families throughout the year. Be the change you wish to see and love where you live.”

Meanwhile, other teams focussed on a 16 mile stretch of the Trans Pennine Trail across south Warrington from Lymm to Spike Island.

A total of 84 bags of litter removed from the TPT over the Great British Spring Clean timeframe, with 27 volunteers taking part from litter network groups across Warrington

A total of 16 miles of trail were tackled, from Lymm in the east to Fiddlers Ferry in the west, and beyond to Spike Island

There were five walking picks, and 2 cycle picks, to cover the whole length and any fly tipping problem areas were reported to Warrington Borough Council.
