Planners approve changes to historic house

PLANNING chiefs have given the green light for alterations to a Victorian house originally built for the staff at historic Grappenhall Heys – one time home of banker Thomas Parr.

Warrington Borough Council planners say the alterations to the house in Broad Lane, Grappenhall, will be in keeping with the style and character of the house and will preserve the character and appearance of the Grappenhall conservation area.

The house has undergone alterations in the past and is now a pair of semi-detached properties – Dene Hey and Little Dene Hey.
The changes involve the demolition of a double garage which is in poor condition at Dene Hey to replace it with a new garage and office space which will be more in sympathy with the architecture of the main house.

But the owner of Little Dene Hey objected on the grounds the new garage would be double the height of the existing garage and would be relocated closer to Little Dene Hey.
Another Broad Lane resident supported the proposals, however, and said the design and materials specification of the new garage would make a positive contribution to the conservation area
The property is not a Listed building but is said to be of local interest.

It was originally built by Thomas Parr – founder of Parr’s Bank – to accommodate staff working at his home, Grappenhall Heys the now-demolished mansion which gave its name to the popular Grappenhall Heys Walled Garden, now a major visitor attraction.
