SADLY one more COVID-19 related death has been reported at Warrington Hospital, while new infections are continuing to soar in the town with another 477 confirmed today.

The 477 (417) new COVID-19 cases have been confirmed by the UK Health Security Agency, taking the total number of cases in Warrington since the start of the pandemic to 43,377 (42,900).

Infection rates have risen again to 1,758 (1,665) – 839.6 (795.1) per 100,000 population over a seven-day period which remains below the national average of 881.7 (832.4) per 100,000, which have risen again.

While one more death has been reported at the hospital, five patients have been discharged since yesterday, while inpatient numbers remain at 31, with 5 in ICU.

Meanwhile, the UK has recorded 119,789 new COVID cases in the latest 24-hour period – the highest daily figure since the start of the pandemic. A further 147 coronavirus-related deaths have also been reported. The latest daily figures compare with 106,122 cases – the previous record – and 140 deaths reported on Wednesday.
Yesterday’s 106,122 figure has since been revised up to 109,655 following previous under-reporting in Scotland due to a technical issue.

Meanwhile, new analysis by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) suggests people with Omicron are significantly less likely to develop severe symptoms, but the effects of the booster vaccine wane after 10 weeks. Early results suggest people are 30 to 45% less likely to go to A&E if they are infected with Omicron rather than Delta.
They are also 50 to 70% less likely to be admitted to hospital. The findings are broadly similar to estimates calculated by researchers in Scotland and Imperial College London on Wednesday.
However, the results are largely based on people under the age of 40, who currently have the highest case rates of Omicron.
The variant is still less common in those aged over 60, who are more likely to develop severe disease, and the UKHSA says further analysis will be needed in the coming weeks.
