LEE Briers has been unveiled as part of the new coaching set-up at Wigan Warriors, following his departure from Warrington Wolves.

Briers, 43, will take up the role of assistant coach to new head coach Matty Peet, working alongside Sean O’Loughlin.

England coach Shaun Wane is also returning to the DW Stadium as Leadership Director.

Wolves legend Briers played 425 games for the club between 1998 and 2013 before moving in to coaching roles at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

Following the end of the season, Briers departed the club alongside Andrew Henderson and head coach Steve Price to make way for new coach Daryl Powell.

On his move to Wigan, Briers said: “I’m really excited for the challenge – it’s what dreams are made of. Wigan is a massive Rugby League Club in anybody’s eyes so to be asked to come and coach here is special.

“I’m really looking forward to working alongside the staff here. We’re all focused on one thing and that’s making Wigan attractive winners again. We’re on the same wavelength, we’re all aligned and we’re looking forward to the job.”

Meanwhile, Wolves half-back Gareth Widdop missed out on the Super League Man of Steel award on Monday night.

The marquee signing from St George-Illawarra Dragons, in his second season at the club, was part of a five man shortlist for the award to crown the competition’s best player.

He missed out to Catalans full back Sam Tomkins.
