Warrington release headline signing Greg Inglis from playing contract

WARRINGTON Wolves have confirmed former Australia international Greg Inglis has been released from his playing contract with immediate effect.

Inglis, 34, made a surprise move to Super League ahead of the 2021 season, two years after retiring from the sport while playing for South Sydney Rabbitohs in the NRL.

He suffered a hamstring injury in the defeat to Huddersfield, which was the first game where fans had been allowed to return at the Halliwell Jones Stadium, and was only his third appearance for the club.

Following amicable discussions all parties have therefore come to the mutual agreement to terminate Greg’s playing contract.

The Australian remains fully committed to staying with the Club in a voluntary mentoring role for the remainder of the campaign – assisting with the Club’s performance and Academy set ups in helping young and exciting talent to emerge.

Inglis said: “It’s unfortunate that it’s come to this but the injury is worse than we originally thought.

“Not too many people get the opportunity and the experience to come over here to the UK and play in Super League, especially at my age, and I want to thank Warrington for the opportunity.

“I’ve got nothing but high praise for the Club. They’ve been nothing but good to me and my partner and made us feel welcome from minute one. It’s not just the team it’s the organisation as well that’s done a lot for us.”

It is believed that removing Inglis from the salary cap may create room for the Wolves to sign England international stand-off George Williams, who is a free agent after leaving Canberra Raiders recently.

After Wigan revealed their former player wouldn’t be returning to them, Warrington are heavy favourites for his signature from 2022 and beyond, while some salary cap movement could prompt an early arrival, especially with the World Cup at the end of the year.

Warrington Wolves CEO Karl Fitzpatrick added: “Although we would have liked to have seen Greg in action more, he has brought tremendous value to our organisation with his leadership qualities and in driving Club standards.

“It’s testament to his character that he wishes to remain in Warrington until the end of the season to continue to support the playing group and to mentor a number of our young players.”

Inglis is a three-time NRL champion and a World Cup winner, and a former Golden Boot winner as the best player in the world.

He made three appearances for Warrington, scoring two tries.
