New COVID-19 cases continue to spike as Government say vaccinations are saving lives and keeping people out of hospital

AS the UK reported 16,135 new COVID-19 cases, the highest number of daily infections since early February, 76 new cases were reported in Warrington for a second consecutive day, with infection rates still double the national average.

The 76 (76) new COVID-19 cases take the total number of confirmed cases in Warrington since the start of the pandemic to 19,008 (18,932).



Across the UK another 299,837 people received their first dose of a coronavirus vaccine yesterday, while 250,875 people had a second dose.
This takes the total number of first doses to 43,448,680 and the number of people who are fully vaccinated to 31,740,115.
Meanwhile, Vaccines minister Nadhim Zahawi addressed a Downing Street press conference following the spike in cases.
He said the UK has “come a long way” since the first clinically authorised vaccine was given six months ago, with three in five adults now fully vaccinated.
Almost half of 25 to 29-year-olds in England have now had a first dose, and six jab appointments were booked every second in the first two days since vaccines were opened up to over-18s.
Mr Zahawi said around 14,000 lives had been saved by the vaccination programme and 44,500 hospitalisations prevented, adding that the vaccines are “clearly extremely effective” against the Delta variant and over 60% of those in hospital are unvaccinated.
Cases in Warrington for the last seven days have risen again, with 412 (403) – 196.2 (191.9) per 100,000 population over a seven-day period– just over double the national rate of 97.5 (93.7) per 100,000, which also continues to rise.

The daily number of lab-confirmed UK cases was 16,135 (11,625), taking the total number to 4,667,870 (4,651,988).
Across the country, there are 1,508 (1,378) patients currently in hospital and 250 (227) on ventilation.
