Top favourites for Euro 2020 Golden Boot Award

0

The 2020 European Championships is set to be a tournament unlike any other. Aside from the obvious strangeness of hosting such an event in a global pandemic, there is also the added novelty of it being played in multiple nations around the continent.

What’s also unique about this edition, is the sheer number of contenders there are for the coveted Golden Boot award – traditionally handed out to the tournament’s top scorer. You can take a look at more football bets today for both specials and individual fixtures. Here is your guide to the top favourites for this year’s Golden Boot, which includes some new names alongside the usual suspects.

Harry Kane

Given that the Final and both Semi-finals are being played at Wembley, it only feels right that we begin with England’s talismanic captain. Harry Kane was the top goalscorer at his last major international tournament, that being the 2018 World Cup, where he netted six times. This time around, he has a stronger supporting cast around him, and is on familiar turf, with most of England’s games being played in London. Kane is currently 9/1 to win the Golden Boot with Boylesports.

Romelu Lukaku

Lukaku comes into Euro 2020 as the red-hot favourite for the Golden Boot. While Kane has the pedigree, the Belgian forward will be served by the likes of Kevin De Bruyne this summer, and will arguably be attempting to score against weaker opponents than Kane in the group stage. He is also fresh off the back of an extraordinary season in Serie A, where he scored 24 times on course to helping Inter win the Scudetto. After Lukaku’s brace of goals against Russia in the opening game, he is now just 5/2 to take home the award.

Kylian Mbappe

France are the reigning world champions, and they come into this summer’s competition as the joint-favourites alongside England. Unsurprisingly, Les Blues have three players who could conceivably be regarded as top candidates to win the Golden Boot – the first of which being Mbappe. The PSG superstar has enjoyed another fine campaign for the French club and will be looking to link up effectively with the next man on our list. The 22-year-old is back at 12/1 to win the Golden Boot at the time of writing.

Karim Benzema

After a five year absence from the French national set-up, the powerful Real Madrid forward is back. Benzema was banished from the French squad in 2016 following allegations of blackmail against one of his former teammates, which meant that he wasn’t a part of the squad for their 2018 triumph. Several years later, bygones are seemingly bygones, as France manager Didier Deschamps is set to entrust the 33-year-old with leading the line in place of Olivier Giroud, who did a fine job in Russia. Benzema is between 16/1 and 20/1 with the bookies to take the top scorer accolade.

Ciro Immobile

The Italian poacher has been prolific for club side Lazio for some time now, winning Serie A’s Golden Boot award on five separate occasions. However, his form is a bit patchier for the Azzurri, where he has only bagged 14 goals in 47 caps. If Italy are to go deep into this summer’s competition, it will surely have a lot to do with the passionate striker, who is currently the fifth favourite according to the bookies – at around 12/1.

Cristiano Ronaldo

Ronaldo may have broken just about every goal record there is to break, but incredibly, he has never managed to win the Euro Golden Boot award. He won’t have to do it all on his own this time around, as Portugal head into Euro 2020 with a much stronger squad than they had during their triumphant 2016 run. It was a hard-earned victory that had a lot to do with Ronaldo’s immense talent, as well as his inspirational captaincy. Even though the 36-year-old isn’t required to carry the national team anymore, he should still pop up with some vital goals this summer – especially if Portugal go all the way.

Memphis Depay

The final man on our list of favourites is arguably the most overlooked, as he isn’t a striker at all. Nevertheless, Memphis Depay has been a talismanic figure for both club and country in recent seasons, helping Lyon to qualify for the Champions League, and helping Holland to return to a major international tournament for the first time since 2014. He carries the weight of expectation for the Netherlands this summer, but at odds of 20/1, Depay could be the value pick in the Golden Boot market.
