Yellows left frustrated as festive fixtures postponed

WARRINGTON Town have been left frustrated after their Boxing Day and New Year’s Day opponents exercised their right to postpone the upcoming matches.

The Yellows were due to play in the league for the first time since the beginning of November this Saturday, when they were scheduled to travel to Witton Albion.

A home game, the first since October 31, was also due against Bamber Bridge to kick-off 2021.

However, following on from the Northern Premier League’s decision to make playing those games optional, both opponents have informed Warrington Town they do not wish to play – despite Yellows chairman Toby Macormac confirming the club was keen to play both.

A club statement said: “While, like every other club, we are adversely affected by the current restrictions, we were keen to return to action as soon as fans were able to return, especially as it doesn’t look like the situation will be getting any better in the New Year.

“Without playing football, the prospects of another null and void season are increasingly likely – and that would be of great disappointment and also cause issues of its own in relation to things like season tickets and sponsors.

“What we do not want to do is rely on the goodwill of fans once again; we wanted to make the best of the situation that is presented to us, which is of no fault to the club, other clubs or indeed the league.”

Warrington Town have played just nine of their 42 league fixtures to date, and the prospect of completing the season looks bleak.

They managed to play 32 games last season before the March lockdown, and the season was later declared null and void.
