THE number of COVID-19 infections in Warrington is continuing to rise with another 96 confirmed cases in the latest figures from Public Health England, with the town facing tougher “lockdown” restrictions from Wednesday.
Sadly one more patient has died at Warrington & Halton Hospitals in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of deaths at the hospital to 151.
As the cases continue to rise, pubs and bars are expected to be told to close for up to a month along with travel restrictions in a bid to slow down infection rates, which have reached a seven day average high of 94.3. Those who are vulnerable will also be told to shield again.
The total number of confirmed cases in Warrington since March is now 3,382 (3,286). The seven day average as of October 3 was 94.3 (84.6).
Meanwhile, Government Ministers are facing a backlash from leaders in the north of England over the proposed fresh coronavirus lockdowns, expected to come into force on Wednesday, which they say risk “severe redundancies” and business closures in the run-up to Christmas.
The comments from Greater Manchester and Liverpool’s elected Mayors and council leaders come as Prime Minister Boris Johnson is set to outline a new three-tiered system of measures to MPs on Monday with plans expected to include the closure of pubs, restaurants and other hospitality venues.
Leaders from Greater Manchester, Tyneside, Sheffield and Liverpool have called for more cash to support areas placed under tougher restrictions, warning ministers they cannot lockdown the North “on the cheap”.
They say an expansion of the UK-wide Job Support Scheme, announced by Chancellor Rishi Sunak on Friday, does not go far enough.
Under the scheme, workers at businesses forced to close, will have two-thirds of their salaries paid by the government.
In response to the criticisms, the government insisted it has been working with local leaders and will “keep all financial support under review to support businesses who need it most and protect jobs over the coming weeks and months”.
A government spokesperson said: “The Job Support Scheme is just one element of this comprehensive package, which includes rental support, mortgage holidays, and £9.3bn of extra funding for the welfare safety net to help those unable to access other forms of support.”
