WHILE one more person has sadly died at Warrington Hospital after testing positive for COVID-19, there were just three new confirmed cases – the smallest increase since the last week of March.

The death toll at Warrington Hospital now numbers 80 while there have been 578 confirmed cases – an increase of three on yesterday and the smallest recorded increase since the end of March. But with at least 37 deaths in local care homes the town’s death toll is at least 117.

Meanwhile across the country there was a sharp rise in the national death toll as UK care home figures were included for the first time.
The daily number of COVID-19 associated UK deaths was 765 and the total number of COVID-19 associated UK deaths rose to 26,097, the second largest in Europe, only second behind Italy.
The daily number of lab-confirmed UK cases was 4,076 and the total number of lab-confirmed UK cases is now 165,221.
The new method of reporting deaths showed an additional 3,811 fatalities since the start of the pandemic, about 70 per cent which were outside hospital settings.

Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab, standing in for prime minister Boris Johnson who was absent after the birth of his son, insisted there had not been a “sudden surge.”
Public Health England’s Medical Director Dr Yvonne Doyle, said she could not say whether deaths in care homes were falling, although they would know soon because the hospital curve had declined.
