Lymm Historic Transport Day supports worthy causes during time of crisis

ORGANISERS of the Lymm Historic Transport Day have used profits which would have normally paid for this year’s event to support worthy casues during times of crisis – handing out over £13,000.

This year should have seen the eighth annual Lymm Historic Transport Day taking place on June 28th. Sadly this year the canal will be empty, there will be no sound of steam engines and no crowds enjoying one of the village’s great days out.
Instead though the group have still tried to make a contribution the local community by donating all of the profits from last year’s event to local causes and other charities that desperately need support in these difficult times.
Just this week the group answered an urgent appeal from local Samaritans groups in Warrington and Northwich by donating £1,000. Samaritans is a volunteer run charity that provides a vital service that is needed more than ever in the current situation. Its fundraising activities have been severely curtailed by the lockdown as have all of the local charities that so many people rely on. Earlier in the crisis the group donated £3,000 to Warrington Foodbank and a further £3,000 to St Roccos. After last year’s event and long before the crisis they were also able to donate £3,000 to Lymm Heritage Centre. That could now be a vital lifeline for this important local facility that will hopefully help to bring back the visitors once the crisis eases. Another £1,000 went to Maggies Cancer Centres and £500 to the RAF Benevolent Fund who provided the fantastic flypast last year. In addition to that the group had already handed over £1,600 to local Scout and ATC groups who had helped out on the day.
That’s £13,100 in total; all only possible thanks to all the exhibitors, cars, boats , bikes, railways, traction engines and everything else that makes the event what it is, plus the visitors who hand over their entry money…. and of course not forgetting the group of volunteers who make it all happen in the first place.
“We are very proud of what we bring to our village” said Event Director Alan Williams, “and we look forward to seeing everyone again next year. I must confess I am almost hoping it pours down on June 28th this year. That means we will be owed a sunny day next year.- Sunday June 27th.”

Alan added:We shouldn’t need to run a marathon or pack bags in a supermarket before we dip our hands in our pockets to help some of the vital charities . We appreciate that many people are already struggling financially but for those that can afford it now more than ever we need to share what we have.”
