Digital Parliament set to become a reality

WARRINGTON North MP Charlotte Nichols has welcomed news from Dr John Benger, the Clerk of the House of Commons, which has committed to working together to finding a solution that allows Members to work remotely.

Dr Benger responded to a letter signed by Charlotte Nichols MP and 153 Members of Parliament calling for a digital Parliament to be put in place during the COVID-19 pandemic by the time the House returns on April 21st.

Ms Nichols said: “I’m pleased progress is being made and the House is committed to changing how Parliament works during these exceptional times. We must enable democracy to continue during the coronavirus outbreak, so that the people of Warrington North can see their issues raised in Parliament. The country is adapting to social distancing, so must Parliament”.

However, the letter from Dr Benger said that the House would have to come together to approve remote working, raising clear issues as to how this can be achieved whilst respecting social distancing.
