Helen Jones – longest serving MP in Warrington’s history

AUGUST is regarded as the “silly season” in the news business – the month when not too much happens.
It seems to be the same in the political world – because a constituent of Warrington North Labour MP Helen Jones has found the time to do some research which reveals she is the longest continuous serving Member of Parliament in Warrington’s history.
As of today (Monday) she has reached 8,131 days… and counting.
In second place, the research reveals, is Gilbert Greenall (Conservative) who represented the old Warrington constituency from 26 August 1847 to 7 December 1868) – 7,774 days.
In third place is Tom Williams (Labour) again for the old Warrington constituency from 20 April 1961 to 16 July 1981 – 7,392 days.
The only other MP to reach 5,000 days is Noel Goldie (Cons – Warrington) from Oct 1931 to July 1945 totalling exactly 5,000 days.
Other recent MPs have totalled the following continuous days in office.
Doug Hoyle (Lab – Warrington)  5,768
Helen Southworth (Lab – Warrington South)  4,753
David Mowat (Con – Warrington South)  2,590
Mike Hall (Lab – Warrington South)  1,848
Chris Butler (Con – Warrington South)  1,764
Mark Carlisle (Con – Warrington South)  1,463
Faisal Rashid (Lab – Warrington South)  788 and counting
It being the Silly Season, Warrington-Worldwide has done some research of its own, taking into account the fact that the Warrington South constituency was only created in 1983, prior to which it was the major part of the Runcorn constituency.
This means that Mark Carlisle, later to become Baron Carlisle of Bucklow, who served as Runcorn MP from 1964 to 1983 and then as Warrington South MP for a further four years, might give Ms Jones a run for her money.
