Sam wants everyone to join the “Race for Life”

A GIANT “Race for Life” wall paying tribute to a Warrington woman has gone up at Victoria Park, Warrington to encourage people to take part in Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life.
Sam Self, will feature on the giant wall to encourage people in the town to sign up for this year’s Warrington Pretty Muddy and Pretty Muddy Kids events on June 2.
Sam’s personal story and motivation behind her participation in Race for Life will be displayed on a giant back sign at the venue – like the signs worn by participants on their backs and a key element of both the events and this year’s campaign. The wall is designed to mirror the hugely emotional reflection area set up on event day, where participants come together to remember loved ones lost to cancer, celebrate the lives of those dear to them who have survived or support those going through treatment.
Sam said: “ I do Race for Life as it’s an amazing way to raise money for a cause so close to my heart.
I’ve lost both my Mum and brother to this terrible disease, and many other family members have struggled with cancer diagnosis and treatment.
“I’ll fight every day to stop others having to suffer what they did, and Race for Life is the best way for me to give something back doing something I love. I’ve participated in Race for Life since 2001 when I ran my first ever 5k with a friend just after my Mum was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer. In 2007 when my brother was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma I did it again and have pretty much done it every year since.
“ I’ve volunteered as an event day host in the North West for over three years now and have loved every minute of it, and this year I’ll be volunteering at approximately nine different Race for Life events in our region.
“I plan to complete the Pretty Muddy course in my home town of Warrington – I’ve even persuaded my husband to tag along this time as for the first time ever men can take part too!! I love the atmosphere at Race for Life and Pretty Muddy events. Everyone’s there for the same reason – they’ve been affected in some way by cancer and there’s such a sense of camaraderie which makes it so special.”
Sam is encouraging people who have not yet signed up to do it now.
Sarah Hunter, Cancer Research UK’s Warrington event manager, said: “We’re very grateful to Sam for her support with this campaign. By following Sam’s lead and joining the Race for Life in Warrington, people can make a real difference in the fight against cancer.
“You don’t need to be sporty to take part. You don’t have to train, and you certainly don’t need to compete against anyone else. It’s a perfect example of everyday people doing an extraordinary thing – uniting in a common cause to beat cancer.”
