The Transporter Bridge Group gets a boost

Friends of the Transporter Bridge were delighted to receive a £200 donation from Lymm Historic Transport Day.

At the outset this doesn’t seem much but Margaret Ingham, the chairman of FOWTB, wants to highlight the support received from Alan Williams and Transport Day since they were formed in April 2015.

The Friends first exhibited Norman Williams’ Meccano bridge in June 2015 at Transport Day and it brought the campaign to lots of local people.

Margaret gives talks on the bridge and at a recent one to Lymm History Society she was very pleased that so many more people are now aware of the unique Rail Transporter Bridge on our doorstep.

The Transporter Bridge is one of only a handful left in the world.

It has a fascinating history, from transporting cement rail wagons, workers and trucks to being used as a fire watching post during the Second World War.

It is said to be the only rail transporter bridge among eight transporter bridges left in the world.

It is Grade 2* listed on English Heritage’s “At Risk” Register.

Margaret said: “Lymm Historic Transport Day is second only to Warrington Borough Council for the support received and the recent trip to the World Congress of Transporter Bridges is raising our profile above that of Middlesbrough, who despite their tremendous bridge, do not get involved in the Congress.

“It didn’t seem possible in 2015 but three years later there are real prospects that our bridge will eventually become a tourist attraction and source of pride for the town that it should be.”

One heritage group supporting another to achieve more is an example that would benefit all of us.

The next Lymm Historic Transport Day is on Sunday June 23 next year .
