CCTV image released following distraction theft

POLICE have released a CCTV image of two men they want to speak to in connection with a distraction theft at a supermarket in Warrington.

At around 9.30pm on Friday August 24 a 33-year-old woman let a man go in front of her at the tills at the Aldi store in Fordton Retail Park on Chiltern Road, Orford.

He and another man stood by her as she typed in her PIN number to pay for her shopping with a bank card.

The two men then followed the woman outside and offered to help her put the shopping in her car.

She accepted their offer and after the two men had helped her and walked away she could not find the bank card that she had put in her bag.

Over the next three-and-a-half hours the card was used to withdraw money from a cash point on Buttermarket Street in Warrington and at the Asda supermarket on Green Lane in Stoneycroft, Liverpool.

It was also used to buy goods in the Asda store at the Cockhedge Shopping Centre in Warrington.

Enquiries into the incident are ongoing and officers believe the two men in the CCTV image may be able to help with their investigation.

They are urging anyone who recognises either of the men in the CCTV image or thinks they may know who they are to come forward.

Police Constable Andrew Schofield said: “We believe the two men in the CCTV image may have vital information to help with our ongoing investigation into a distraction theft in Warrington.

“If you think you recognise them or know who they are please call Cheshire Police on 101, quoting IML 164983, give us the details via https://cheshire.police.uk/contact/general-enquiries or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

“I would also like to appeal directly to the men in the CCTV image to get in touch.”

Residents are urged to be vigilant and to take the following steps to lessen their chances of being a victim of this type of crime:

  1. Do not leave your handbag hung over your shopping trolley or unattended at any time. Make sure your bag has a secure zip fastening, and for added security put your purse inside a zipped pocket inside the bag to help protect against thieves reaching inside it to search for valuables.
  2. If you are approached by a stranger in unusual circumstances in or around a supermarket, do not engage with them, particularly if they ask for directions or change or offer to help you put shopping in your car. Be firm with them, walk away and report any suspicious activity to the police.
