Carden positive despite Bank Holiday stalemate

WARRINGTON Town manager Paul Carden was positive despite seeing his side draw two blanks over the Bank Holiday weekend.

The Yellows followed Saturday’s goalless draw at home to Stalybridge Celtic with another 0-0 away at Bamber Bridge on Monday.

It leaves them with just five points from four games so far and only have scored in one of those games.

Carden said: “It was an open game, we played better in the second half. I thought we were poor first half, I changed the system and clearly it didn’t work, so we changed back.

“You can still see players getting used to one another and I think both keepers made saves that have won both sides a point.

“They looked like a side that had been together for a while and it’s a lovely pitch and they use it well.

“I thought in the second half we had a lot of purpose about us and we looked more of a threat going forward.

“There were some good individual performances but it’s getting them to knit as a team. It’s always going to be the case though when you’ve only got two outfield players from last season.

“I’m pleased with the clean sheet, pleased with the chances we created in the second half because they were good chances but we know we can be better individually and as a team, so I’m positive.

“It’s coming together but it’s still not how I want it.”

Such is the competitiveness of the Evo-Stik Premier League that only two sides remain unbeaten – ironically, the two sides Warrington played this weekend, though Bamber Bridge have played a game less.

Even table-topping Gainsborough Trinity only have nine points out of a possible 12 and just five points separates the top 20 clubs, with only Stafford and Lancaster having failed to win so far.

Carden added: “It’s not the start we wanted, but I think you’re seeing now the way the league is with the less teams, less games there’s 12 points points less to be won and I think in general the ratio of points per game is going to be less to win and get promotion.

“I think the nature of the league this season is there’s teams that have come up and thrown a few quid at it, you’ve got teams that have come down that seem to have done the same, but then there’s been a lot of building going on.

“I think the teams that have kept together, the likes of Farsley, will be OK, it’s a lot easier working with what you know.

“I can see quite a patchy league this season but with the players we’ve got to come in hopefully makes us stronger and we can work a bit in training this week and have a bit more understanding of what we need to do.”

Warrington return to action on Saturday with a trip to North Ferriby United.
