Thelwall Morris Men dance for Stephen Hough

RENOWNED pianist, composer and author Stephen Hough has gone back to his roots by composing a tune for Thelwall Morris Men.

Hough, 56, was born in Heswall but grew up in Thelwall, where he began piano lessons at the age of five.

When Thelwall Morris Men became aware of this connection, thanks to his broadcast on Desert Island Discs, they asked him to compose the tune which he did.

The dance was presented to him at the Belvedere Arms pub near to the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall, where Hough has been Artist in Residence.

David Devereux, Thelwall Morris Men Squire, said: “While having the rhythm of a traditional Morris tune, it is also quite unusual so we put together a dance that we hoped would do justice to his music.

“We have called the dance Primrose and Blue after the colours of the Warrington Rugby team.

“Stephen Hough has been Artist in Residence at the Liverpool Philharmonic this spring and summer and we found the opportunity to present our dance to him at a pub.

“He was delighted with our performance. While Morris dancing is a very ancient English tradition, we believe this is an example of how it is still relevant in the 21st Century.”
