IT gave me no great pleasure to report on the fall from grace of our town’s former Mayor Cllr Les Morgan, following his unfortunate choice of words typed in frustration following the defeat of his beloved Warrington Wolves.
While social media has been a useful tool for politicians to promote themselves in the local community, it can also prove to be their downfall.
Just like texts and emails, something typed in jest or haste can be taken out of context and what might seem funny to one generation can be extremely offensive to another.
Sadly for Cllr Morgan, a lifelong Warrington Wolves fan, it wasn’t his first indiscretion following on from his comments about Warrington born DJ Chris Evans and his public outburst at the town hall entrance in front of a child handing in a petition.
His comments about Warrington Wolves’ King brothers, was the straw that broke the camel’s back and unfortunately brought about his resignation.
It is a stark warning on how important it is for politicians and others in the public eye to use social media wisely.
As one of our readers posted “Social media….and foolish fingers”, a toxic combination, the scourge of our times and the downfall of many!”
