Mowat asked to tackle climate change

WARRINGTON South MP David Mowat has been asked to take action on climate change.

Seven churches that are part of the Stockton Heath Christian Aid Group and four primary schools invited him to St Thomas’ Church in Stockton Heath to raise the issue and show David some of the things that could be affected.

Year 6 from St Thomas’ Primary school presented David with 658 footprints made from recycled paper that had been collected from the church members and the schools. Each footprint highlighted something they care about.

The church members also asked him to push for the UK government to ratify the Paris climate agreement, and deliver an ambitious low carbon investment plan, due to be published at the end of the year.

The event was part of the Speak Up week of action, which will saw thousands of local people meeting their MPs across the country in the week of 8-16th October.

From WI nature walks to church tea parties, community energy visits to school activities, people from all walks of life made sure their politicians saw how much their constituents care about what we could lose to climate change.

The Speak Up week of action has been organised by The Climate Coalition – a group of over 100 organisations including Christian Aid, RSPB, WWF, Islamic Relief, CAFOD, WI as well as local groups.

It is part of an ongoing effort to encourage our government to shift to 100% clean energy within a generation to protect the people, places and life we love from climate change.

Jenny Myall, from St Matthews Church Stretton, who attended the event said: “I want to see progress on tackling climate change because I care about my granddaughter’s future and I think we need to do all we can to protect them.”
