The Labour Party have claimed victory in the Winwick Parish Council by-election.

The contest – held after the resignation of an Independent Parish Councillor after just three months in the role – saw Borough Councillor Cathy Mitchell storm to victory with 80% of the vote, fending off a challenge by UKIP.

Cllr Mitchell, who also represents the village at the Town Hall and is Chair of the Winwick Carnival Committee, polled 234 votes, taking a seat for Labour in Winwick village for the first time in 15 years.

A spokesperson from Warrington North Labour Party said: “We are delighted by the election of Councillor Cathy Mitchell to Winwick Parish Council.

“She is the first Labour Party candidate in 15 years to win a contested election in the centre of the village.

“Her dedication, hard work and commitment to local people has been recognised at the ballot box, whilst UKIP have once again shown they are a busted flush in the eyes of Warrington North voters.”

Speaking after the result, Cllr Cathy Mitchell said: “I’m delighted to have received the trust and support of residents in Winwick once again, who have seen fit to elect me to represent them on the Parish Council.

“I will work hard over the next four years in the best interests of the local community, deliver on my election pledges, and ensure that our area remains a vibrant and welcoming place for everyone.

“I’m looking forward to rolling up my sleeves straight away!”

Warrington North MP Helen Jones added: “I’m very pleased that voters have put their faith in Cathy once again. She is an excellent local councillor, who works tirelessly for residents in both Winwick and Burtonwood.”

The turnout was 15.6% and there was one spoiled ballot paper.
