Fears growing over proposed development at Grappenhall Heys

FEARS are growing over a proposed “huge” housing development on greenfield land at Grappenhall Heys, Warrington.

Although local residents have always known the land has been earmarked for further development there are concerns over the scale of the proposed development which has been outlined by the Homes and Communities Agency.

The Agency has published notice of a public meeting at Appleton Parish Hall, on Wednesday October 5th, to outline more about the proposed housing development.

But one local resident said: “We have always known the land has been earmarked for development at some stage in the future – but the scale of this development looks huge!

“Although a public meeting has been called it hasn’t been very well publicised with just a few signs being posted in the area.

“There are not many facilities in the area to serve the existing homes – let alone all these proposed new ones.”

The proposed development will cover a large area of the local countryside around a pathway which currently leads to Grappenhall Cricket Club.

The public meeting which takes place from 1.30-7.30pm on Wednesday October 5th will give people the opportunity to view and comment on the proposals.

  1. Also up for disposal in 2016/17 is the HCA land designated as Pewterspear Green 13 approx 8 ha and Appleton Cross 3 approx 20 ha. Grappenhall Heys is approx 22 ha. I have lived in the immediate area for nearly 30 years….in homes built on the former Commission for New Towns land, and have always known that that land would be developed for (much needed) housing over time. Indeed, it is most likely that the concerned resident who has commented on the forthcoming development lives in a home built on HCA land. My understanding is that the uplift in value of the HCA land will be used to fund the second bridge for Warrington that is currently in the advanced planning stage.

    • My comment to the concern over the proposed(well it is cut and dried really) is one major factor that council always ignore and that is the impact on the road to the Motorway that all this extra housing will bring.I live at Wrights Green and have for many years been astonished at the complacency of councils about speed here along this road, brought about only by extra building as more cars go with the developments. At the moment, the council is considering a 30 mph down from 40 after many years being informed that something is needed urgently.I feel speed bumps should be here along with a 20mph!!!
Primarily, this road morning and night is used as a very famous Rat run by arrogant members of the public getting back and to to the motorway. Most mornings it is virtually impossible to even get out of the drive,so I can go to work! These drivers speed like rands Hatch drivers but not as competently!!! So,we have a major problem here already and along comes another development and guess what?Which road is going to be saturated with cars to get to that motorway,Lumbrook at Wrights Green.
Councils were aware many moons ago about the much needed Motorway Link(Howshoots)but apparently made an error and it never transpired.Well all I can say is if they are letting, once again huge developments in the area take place and pocket extra for the Bridge into that awful town of Warrington then they should cream off some to use that link road at Howshoots asap as going forward the dire problems already here will be become catastrophic!!!
I was born and bred in Stretton and have seen land compulsorily purchased in order to build more much needed housing in the area none of which ever came to fruition as
the only houses built were to swell the council coffers to waste on (my list is endless). Make no mistake,Land in these Shires is valuable to the Council and they get well compensated for it,Rates are huge!!!,but what they omit to really get their teeth into are priorities such as Road structures already dangerously inadequate before consenting to covering over countryside that inevitably is lost forever.
I realise houses need to be built, but look deeply into why so many in beautful farmland and so big.(money) is after all the primary motive. Well,my motive is common sense and Concern for myself and my neighbours in this area and other areas where merely driving onto the road has now become a very frightening and dangerous prospect and I am Sick of it.That Link to the Motorway is so vital. At this moment in time I have been waiting for areply to an E Mail sent about this but no reply has benn forthcoming except to say someone would get back in a few days? It does not surprise me but what will is the fact that noone will reall take any of this on board before any planning is given as future consequences will be their problem not ours.

      • I also am appalled at the scale of the proposed building on what was and is a great walking, with or without a dog, and cycle path,so many families now enjoy a visit to the walled garden, does anyone really think that this will continue once the actual construction finally begins? i fear not, what a terrible shame, then as if this was not enough we have the threat of even more houses on land in the centre of the old village, eventually the traffic will be horrific, dare i ask where are the doctors, the schools for all these hundreds and hundreds of houses and the thousands of people, lots with children, who are going to occupy these homes
