A SUSPECTED bike thief was apprehended by police in Warrington thanks to a rugby style tackle by a member of the public.

Numerous officers were involved in the apprehension of a male for allegedly stealing a pedal cycle from the town centre – the male was chased on foot and vehicle and eventually detained with the help of a member of the public outside the old Bowling Green Pub on Old Liverpool Road.

A police spokesperson said: “We would especially like to thank this member of the public – he grabbed the alleged offender with a tenacity that would have impressed the England RL selectors. Our CCTV operator was right on the ball too.

A slightly out of breath PC Davies is pictured with the said pedal cycle, the bolt croppers alleged to have been used in the course of the offence and the severed bike lock that was located back in the town centre.
