Weed nightmare at Warrington cemetery

1

WARRINGTON Cemetery has been described as a “total mess” and full of overgrown weeds by a woman visiting a grave to place flowers for Father’s Day this weekend.

Council bosses are blaming a weed “Mare’s Tail” for the problem but Val Daniels, from Latchford, Warrington, who has been visiting the family plot since 1967 when her brother Alan died aged just 22, says it is the worst it has ever been.

Her mother Amelia was buried there in 1987, and her father Harold in 2008.

“When you first enter off Manchester Road it appears well kept. But when you get near the back it is overgrown with weeds and looks a total mess.”

“It is horrible – I have never seen it so bad. We pay our council taxes for it to be maintained and it is currently a disgrace.”

But a Warrington Borough Council spokesperson said: “Warrington cemetery has been maintained to a very high standard for many years now and has been awarded Green Flag status.

“Unfortunately in this area of the cemetery we have a problem with a weed called Mare’s Tail which needs to grow to a certain height before we can effectively treat it. It will be strimmed and treated as soon as possible.”

  1. I was at the cemetery yesterday and there was a workman strimming a weeded area, there does seem to be a problem with mares tail though which is a bugger to get rid of. In fairness the majority of the grounds are kept neat and tidy but some isolated areas seem to be being left for treatment/weed eradication.
