Help and increased support available for flood victims

WARRINGTON Council has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting residents and businesses affected by the December storms which left areas of the town flooded – with increased support for businesses now available.

While the government has yet to confirm that it will in turn compensate Warrington Council, the council itself has taken the decision to underwrite any local claims made under the communities and business recovery scheme.

Anybody whose home was flooded may be eligible for a one-off payment of £500 to help with recovery costs such as temporary accommodation. Any householders forced to move out of their property because of flooding are entitled to a 100% council tax discount for up to three months.

Businesses forced to stop trading due to flood water in their premises could also be entitled to a 100% rates discount for up to three months. In addition, severely affected small and medium sized businesses could be entitled to grants of up to £2,500 to help them recover quickly and get them trading successfully and sustainable.

Councillor Russ Bowden, executive board member for corporate finance, said: “I am pleased to announce this new addition to our scheme, which shows our continuing support to local businesses that have been affected. It is the right decision to make whilst we continue to await government funding.

“December was a distressing time for many residents and businesses, and anybody who has suffered should get in touch with the council as soon as possible.”
