Rail passengers paying 25% more, says MP

HARD working commuters in Warrington North are having to pay 25 per cent more on rail fares than they were five years ago, according to MP Helen Jones.
She says the latest announcement that fares are to rise again means the cost of an annual season ticket from, for example, Padgate to Manchester Oxford Road has risen by £288 since 2010.
The MP said: “Passengers in Warrington North have been hit again and again by eye-watering rail fare rises.
“Fares have now rocketed by 25 per cent under the Tories,  far outstripping any increase in most people’s pay packets.
“For many people here, travelling by train isn’t a luxury,  It’s how they get to work every day.  A £288 increase in five years cannot, in many cases, be easily absorbed.  Labour is committed to fairer fares,  investment in a 21st century railway and giving passengers a stronger voice.”
