Want to get poetic about Warrington?

IS there something about Warrington you would like to get poetic about?
Perhaps a building, a favourite beauty spot?  Perhaps one like our picture of the Bridgewater Canal at Lymm?
If so you could spend a few hours of the Christmas holiday writing a poem for the annual “Local poem” competition run by United Press.
There’s a £1,000 prize up for grabs – and a selection of the best poems are published in an anthology of poetry about towns and villages across the country.
But the deadline is December 31, so there is no time to waste.
It’s free to enter this annual competition and it’s open to all UK residents, young or old.
All you have to do is send a poem about life in your own home town or area to “Local Poem”, United Press Ltd, Admail 3735, London, EC1B 1JB or visit the website www.unitedpress.co.uk or call 0844 800 9177.
The best poem will win £1,000 cash and you can send up to three entries, which must be no more than 25 lines (each blank line counts as one line) and 160 words each.
“It can even be about something or someone from the poet’s home area,” explained a United Press spokesman.
“We find that poems written from personal observation and experience are the most heartfelt and expressive, so we’re expecting some great entries.”
Last year’s winner was from Darwin in Lancashire and previous winners came from Leicester, Surrey, South Yorkshire, Bristol, Oxford, Stafford, Rotherham and Greater Manchester. Maybe this year the £1,000 will go to a poet from Warrington.
Winning poems have been about a river, a tower, a local character, village life and local history.
