Rundown shopping centre to be given a new life

AN imaginative plan to regenerate a rundown shopping centre has been given the go-ahead by Warrington planners.
The scheme will result in 24 affordable homes – 18 houses and six bungalows – and two retail units at Harrison Square, off Boulting Avenue, Dallam.
Currently  the area is regarded as a site in much need of regeneration. Much of the land is vacant and unsightly.
Originally there were shops on the southern and northern sides of Harrison Square but those on the southern side were demolished last year after it was decided they were unsafe.  This left a convenience store/post office and pharmacy on the northern side.
Members of the borough council’s development management committee were told it was planned to carry out the development in three phases.
The first phase would be to build eight dwellings and two new retail units on the eastern side, along with customer parking for the shops.
Phase Two would see eight dwellings built on the southern side of the square and the third phase would involve relocating the convenience store/post office and pharmacy into the two new shops enabling the old buildings to be demolished to make way for the final eight dwellings.
Councillors were told the scheme would make a valuable contribution to the availability of affordable homes in the borough and the scheme would enhance the character and appearance of the area.
