Police thank public for help in recovering wheelchair

THE detective who returned a stolen wheelchair to a Warrington family – rescuing their Christmas in the process – has today thanked the public and the media for their help in recovering the property.
DC Vicky Goodwin took the special wheelchair to four-year-old  Lydia Cooper’s home in King George Crescent, Warrington.
Lydia suffers from Cerebral Palsy and Hydrocephalus after being taken ill shortly after being born.
As already reported by Warrington-Worldwide, the wheelchair was found in the boot of the Cooper family’s car when it was recovered in Liverpool the day after it was stolen.
The raiders had broken into the house, stolen Christmas presents from under the tree and cash from Christmas cards while the family slept upstairs.
They then took the keys to the family’s Ford Kuga – with the specialised wheelchair in the boot.
When the car was found by a member of the public who had seen the publicity about the theft the wheelchair was still in the boot.
But the presents and money were still missing.
DC Goodwin said: “We recovered the car and thankfully the wheelchair and the children’s car seats were still in situ, but there were no presents in the car.
“We’re still appealing for witnesses and thank the media and the public for their continued support.
“Anyone with information should contact Cheshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 413 of 20 December 2015.
“Alternatively, information can be given anonymously by contacting Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
Warrington residents raised more than £2,500 through a social media campaign and Warrington Disability Partnership arranged for Lydia to have a replacement wheelchair on loan.
But the return of the wheelchair is an unexpected “present” for the Cooper family.
