WARRINGTON’S two MPs – Labour’s Helen Jones and Conservative David Mowat – both voted for UK air strikes against Islamic State in Syria  in last night’s House of Commons vote.
Within hours, RAF aircraft launched their first attack on oil fields controlled by IS in Syria.
Ms Jones was one of 66 Labour MPs to vote in favour of the strikes after leader Jeremy Corbyn had decided to allow a free vote.helenjones.jpg
Only a handful of Conservatives opposed the strikes.
In recent weeks, both MPs had spoken out about the issue.
Mr Mowat had said any military action should not come at the expense of finding a long-term political solution.
But he said: “We either take these murderers on in their strongholds – where, incidentally, they are hard at work slaughtering men, raping women and enslaving thousands – or we wait for them to come to our shores and run amok.”davidmowatspeaking
Ms Jones had said IS presented an immediate danger and there was no possibility of negotiating with them.
She added: “Obviously any proposals for military action will need to be combined with an agreement on the future of Syria.”
MPs voted by 397 to 223 in favour of the air strikes.
