Know your NHS options this winter

NHS WARRINGTON Clinical Commissioning (CCG) has launched a campaign to help people choose the right health service to suit their needs this winter.
The “Know your options” campaign will also help the health service copy with increased demand during the winter months.
A CCG spokesperson said: “The arrival of cold weather can trigger or worsen some illnesses, meaning that health services are more in demand.
“NHS organisations and local councils work together to prepare for winter, but it’s also important that you understand the range of treatment options available to you and your family.”
The GP should be the first point of contact for non-emergency illnesses which people can’t treat themselves and practices can offer same day appointments if necessary.
When the surgery is closed, it is still possible to see a local GP with the GP out-of-hours service by calling 111.
The local pharmacy can also offer free, confidential advice on a range of health issues and no appointment is necessary
Anyone who is unwell, unsure or confused can also get expert health advice and information, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, from NHS 111.
Accident and emergency and ambulance services are for life-threatening conditions.
Other tips to ensure people are prepared for common illnesses like coughs and colds include:
*Keep a well stocked medicine cabinet at home.
*Stay up-to-date with repeat prescriptions, leaving plenty of time ahead of bank holidays.
*Visit www.nhs.uk – the largest health website in the country, for information about hundreds of health issues, and details of GPs, pharmacies and dentists in the area.
*Anyone eligible for a free ‘flu vaccination – such as people over 65, children aged 2-4, pupils in years one-to-two at school, adults and children with long term conditions and pregnant women – should contact a GP to make arrangements.
