A taste of life as an on-call firefighter

MORE than 20 prospective firefighters attended a taster event to see if they could be an on-call firefighters at the new Penketh fire station in Warrington.
Construction work has started on the building and Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service held the event to try and find “committed men and women.”
A recruitment pod containing all the equipment used in national firefighter recruitment tests was used on the day.
Fire Service delivery manager for Halton and Warrington, Sean Henshaw, said: “We’re looking for committed men and women to be part of our newest fire station at Penketh.
“Our taster events give a good overview of the levels of fitness required and serving on-call firefighters also attend so prospective recruits are able to learn firsthand just what it means to be an on-call firefighter with Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service.”
Penketh Fire Station is due to open in the autumn next year.
It will comprise a lightweight steel frame structure with a green sedum roof to complement the building’s location and enhance its sustainable credentials.
It is the second of four new fire stations to be built – Alsager Fire Station opened in August this year – with Lymm and Powey Lane Mollington the final two of the current phase of the service’s emergency response programme, ensuring Cheshire’s communities are fully protected.
Chief fire officer Paul Hancock said: “It is exciting to see our ambitious programme becoming a reality and this new fire station will ensure we can continue to protect communities across Cheshire.”
“The investment the Authority has made in the new fire stations, together with changing how some fire engines are staffed, means we will be able to make more efficient and effective use of our emergency response services in the future.
“Our new recruits for Penketh will be helping to provide the best possible service to their community and will be trained to national firefighter standard.”
It is not too late for anyone interested in being an on-call firefighter at Penketh to apply.
Anyone who would like to serve must be at least 18 years of age, possess plenty of common sense and enthusiasm and also be prepared to attend weekly evening training sessions.
It’s essential to live or work within five minutes of the fire station on Widnes Road, Penketh, to be able to respond quickly during the normal working day, have a real wish to support the local community, have an enthusiasm and willingness to work in a team environment and have a reasonable level of physical fitness In return for commitment and enthusiasm an income in the region of £5000 per year is offered.
