Celebrating Armed Forces Day in Warrington

A WIDE variety of events are to be held in Warrington to celebrate Armed Forces Day on Saturday, June 27.
The borough council and partner organisations will organise events commemorating armed forces past, present and future with a fun-family event at The Gateway, Sankey Street starting at 10am and continuing until 1pm.
There will be something for everyone on the day including a “pop-up” WW1 and WW2 interactive exhibition, multi-sports, face painting,  leadership activities with the Army and Sea Cadets, and music from the Co-operative Funeralcare Band North West.
The day also includes the annual Tom Sephton Memorial Trophy, which takes place at Crosfields Rugby League Club.
The event sees teams from the Army and local rugby league teams go head to head in a festival of rugby that aims to raise money for military charities including Combat Stress.
The event starts at 10.30am and is free.
Cllr Mike Hannon (pictured), deputy leader of the council and the council’s armed forces champion, said: “We support this important event every year which gives us the opportunity to show our appreciation for the men and women who make up the armed forces community. It honours those, past
and present, who have served in the armed forces and their families.
“The council was delighted to support the setting up of the landmark Armed Forces Community Support Hub, based in the Gateway. Run by St Loye’s Foundation, the hub provides veterans, serving soldiers, and their families access to a wide variety of services that can support them to lead fulfilling and independent lives, with a particular focus on employment and education.
“Warrington supports the armed forces throughout the year and we also have our very successful WW1 commemorative project which has really captured the imagination of the local community. Some wonderful events have already taken place and there are more to come including the welcome return of Proms in the Park at the Peninsula Barracks, O’Leary Street later this month.”
